PRESCRIBED WORKS OF ART 2023/24
We do not know much about the audiences of early Italian engravings. Considering such works alongside other prints can do much to highlight how tastes varied within one city or across different print publishing centres, and how they might have changed over a period of time. Below are some suggestions for prints which could be compared with your chosen gobbet, as part of your task for next week’s class. You can also choose any other work you think appropriate, especially one of the prints we studied at the Ashmolean.
If you’re keen to address the subject of prints as competitors of paintings or drawings, you are welcome to compare your gobbet with a work in either of these mediums. Landau and Parshall write about this subject in The Renaissance Print, which is on your reading list, and digitised on SOLO.
