Very large exhibition catalogue from the 2005/06 show in Washington and Nuremberg. Excellent book on early printmaking. A helpful overview of the main genres of print that existed in the fifteenth century, and how prints were used.

Very helpful overview of Renaissance printing, with plenty of detail in such a small book. Good starting point for any print researcher.
Landau, David and Peter Parshall. The Renaissance Print, 1470 – 1550. New Haven: Yale University Press, 1994.
A detailed book covering the rise of the printed image in Europe. If in doubt about where to begin your research on a printmaker or a work of art, Landau and Parshall’s text is a good place to start.
Stijnman, Ad. Engraving and Etching 1400-2000: A History of the Development of Manual Intaglio Printmaking Processes. London: Archetype Publications, 2012
Detailed history of European etching and engraving. Particularly useful for explaining the technical process of intaglio printing.
